What is sports massage, and who is it for?

Sports massage is a deeper, more targeted form of massage that works on specific muscles and the soft tissue around them. It is for anyone whose body is under load, whether that is from running, cycling, swimming, the gym, a physical job or long hours at a desk.

The techniques used can help relieve muscle tension, address postural issues and assist with injury rehab. Regular maintenance sports massage is also an excellent way to prevent injury, and to keep you moving freely in your everyday activities.

Pre-event, post-event and maintenance massage

If you are competing, sports massage can be used before an event to prepare tired muscles, and afterwards to speed recovery. Many of my clients book a lighter session in the week before a race such as the Cardiff Half Marathon, then a deeper treatment a few days after.

Between events, a regular maintenance massage, typically every three to six weeks depending on your training load, helps pick up niggles before they become injuries.

Your first session: 60 minutes

New clients book a 60-minute first session. The longer appointment gives time to take a full history, assess how you move and provide a proper treatment. After that, 30 and 45-minute appointments are available for follow-ups and regular maintenance.

As a triathlete who trains and races myself, I understand what tired legs feel like and what it takes to keep them going through a training block. Treatment is adapted to you: it should feel effective, not punishing.

What to expect at your appointment

  • A short chat about what is bothering you, your training and any medical history.
  • A movement and posture assessment where relevant.
  • Hands-on treatment targeted at the areas that need it.
  • Simple advice on stretching, mobility or loading to take away with you.

Frequently asked questions

Does sports massage hurt?

Some techniques work deep into the muscle and can feel intense, but treatment is always adjusted to what you can comfortably tolerate. You should leave feeling looser, not bruised. Tell me at any point if the pressure is too much.

How often should I have a sports massage?

For most people in regular training, every three to six weeks works well. Around a big event you may want a session in the week before and another a few days after. If you are managing a specific injury we will agree a plan together.

Where is the treatment room?

In a dedicated treatment room in west Cardiff, five minutes from Ely, Fairwater and Culverhouse Cross, with free parking on site. Full directions are sent with your booking confirmation.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing you can move in. For leg treatments, shorts are ideal. You will only ever be asked to uncover the area being treated, and towels are used throughout.

Is sports massage only for athletes?

Not at all. Sports massage is for everyone: desk workers with tight shoulders, parents lifting toddlers, people recovering from a strain, and anyone who simply wants to move more freely.
